In our latest experiment, I’m using Tinder to help quit smoking.
It all started when I saw a video of how smoking changes your face. As a non-smoker, it concerns me when I see people at a young age smoking cigarettes in the same way I stuff chocolate bars down my face, and I felt I needed to try to do something about it.
Whilst the above video may raise awareness, it doesn’t stand out in the same way as other methods may do. Tinder is one of the most popular dating apps, particularly within the younger demographic which I’d be targeting. Combined with the fact that it’s free to use in its basic form, it was the perfect avenue for me to send my message.
I found a photo of a fairly attractive man. This was important as he would both be attention grabbing on a service like Tinder, plus it would demonstrate a larger contrast after he was edited. I edited two different version of the man which, along with the original, would show a quick transformation, showing how smoking could affect him.
Smoking affects wrinkling of the skin, greying hair, bags under the eyes, and perhaps most disturbingly, yellowing of teeth. I made sure to emphasise these changes whilst editing the photos.
I then came up with a little slogan: “There’s no smoking without fire.”, which I used on the final photo. I also included a link to the NHS Smokefree website where people can find help and advice on stopping smoking.
The aim is to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking in a way that the younger demographic will pay more attention to. By making the message interactive and adapting it to their current behaviour, I’m hoping they will take the message on board and either stop smoking, or prevent themselves from smoking in the first place.
